Release Candidate:
The 3.11-rc7 prepatch has been tagged and released. There is no announcement on the Linux kernel mailing list, but Linus did post a brief item on the Linux Google+ community. This is, of course, A play on his original “hello everybody” email celebrating the 22nd anniversary of it (https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linux.com%2Fnews%2Fsoftware%2Flinux-kernel%2F734956-linuss-famous-email&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNEAwXOB46TGwOkerOndXb9yeWbAmw).

Samsung Has A New Phone The “Galaxy Mega”
This sucker is big. It measures 6.59 x 3.46 x 0.31, with the screen being 6.3 inches with 233-pixels-per-inch, and 1280-by-720 display. It is the dreamed of “Phablet” that I have always wanted. Granted holding something like that up to your ear for a phone call is a little ridiculous, but who really uses their phone as a phone anyway. It uses a 1.7GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1.5GB ram. This looks like a winner to me and as soon as it’s available on Sprint I will have one.
New Zealand Leads The Way, Will Others Follow
This week New Zealand banned software patents with an overwhelming 117-4 vote. This vote came after five years of debate in Parliament. There was a lot of news about this so you have most likely already heard about it. So rather than write an article on it I am going to poit you at some of the ones I found more interesting.
* Quartz explains how NZ did it without violating international law. (http://qz.com/119419/how-new-zealand-banned-software-patents-without-violating-international-law/)
* Washington Post writer Timothy B. Lee lays out why the United States should follow in NZ’s and also ban software patents. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/08/29/new-zealand-just-abolished-software-patents-heres-why-we-should-too/)
* And last but not least Jolie O’Dell’s short post at VentureBeat, where she writes, “Time to bust out the champagne*, neckbeards!” later on she clarifies that at the bottom with this footnote: “*Just kidding. We know you drink craft brews, not champagne.” (http://venturebeat.com/2013/08/28/software-patents-are-now-illegal-in-new-zealand/#JusQqwO3tVc1mXfP.99)

Hey, thanks for all the great shows.
?….In your combined experience….Do you think running a linux distro over a longer period of time, with all the updates, slows down a marginal machine?
thanks.
My new install is LXLE. Running great, Best wallpaper.
Hi guys, I just wanted to give you a shout to let you know how much I am enjoying your show. I found you through the linux outlaws and you are now my favourite podcast by far. I am pretty new to linux so you guys have been an excellent source for news, tips and inspiration.
Thanks so much for all your efforts, and can I recommend that Matt try some Fullers ESB for breakfast sometime soon 🙂
Keep up the great work,
Alex
Sounds good I will have to check it out.
P.S. I work nights it is my dinner not breakfast 🙂
